Clear guidance for choosing the right stationwear

Use our stationwear garment guide to choose the right uniforms for Fire, EMS, and wildland firefighting, including flame-resistant stationwear and duty apparel, based on role, environment, and operational requirements across Canada.

STAIONWEAR GARMENTS

Selecting stationwear is about more than appearance – it’s about matching the right garment system to the realities of daily operations. Fire halls, EMS stations, and wildland environments each place different demands on uniforms, from heat and flame exposure to durability, comfort, and long-shift wear. This garment guide is designed to help departments and individuals understand how stationwear is intended to perform, how certification and fabric choices influence safety, and how to select garments that support real-world use while aligning with Canadian operational needs.

WILDLAND FIREFIGHTING GARMENT & GEAR GUIDE

NOT ALL STATIONWEAR IS FLAME RESISTANT

Choosing FR stationwear is not about fear — it’s about risk awareness and layered protection. In environments where heat exposure is possible, even briefly, FR stationwear provides a safer foundation for daily operations while maintaining comfort, durability, and professional appearance

FLAME RESISTANT

Garments made from flame-resistant materials, like aramids or treated cotton blends, are designed to self-extinguish when exposed to flame, significantly reducing the risk of burn injuries. This is a critical feature, as many synthetic materials will melt onto the skin when exposed to high heat, which can exacerbate burns.

FR stationwear and FR base layers are a vital layer of protection that can make a significant difference in an emergency. They ensure that your first layer of defense won’t become a source of injury.

NOT FLAME RESISTANT

While non-FR stationwear may look the same as its flame-resistant counterpart, it lacks those critical flame-resistant properties. Non FR garments can provide a professional appearance, comfort, but offer limited safety.

Ideal for administrative and support staff, these uniforms are made from thermally stable materials such as 100% cotton. While NFPA 1970 permits both FR and non-FR workwear, industry best practice generally favors FR garments in fire-service environments to help manage incidental heat exposure.
